In recent years, several celebrities have opted to leave the United States, pointing to Donald Trump’s leadership and the country’s political unrest as motivations for their departures. While many stars voiced intentions to relocate, only a few took the step to move abroad, seeking safety, personal liberty, or family reasons. Pictured here is Actress Eva Longoria on a plane.
1. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi

Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi decided to relocate to the United Kingdom following Trump’s re-election. Initially intending a brief visit, they ultimately chose a permanent stay after the election results. DeGeneres raised concerns about threats to LGBTQ+ rights in the U.S., even contemplating renewing their vows in England should legal protections be diminished.
2. Rosie O’Donnell

In 2025, Rosie O’Donnell moved to Ireland with her daughter and service dog, beginning the pursuit of citizenship there. She connected her move directly to Trump’s return to the presidency, stating she would only think about moving back when all Americans’ rights feel secure.
3. James Cameron

Director James Cameron has resided in New Zealand for over ten years, with no intention of going back to the U.S. He has applied for citizenship in New Zealand, expressing disappointment that America has strayed from its fundamental values. Cameron described the country as being ‘hollowed out’ for political gain.
4. Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria now divides her time between Mexico and Spain after opting to leave the U.S. While work responsibilities drew her abroad, she acknowledged that Trump’s re-election also influenced her decision. Longoria depicted the U.S. atmosphere as ‘dystopian,’ especially in the aftermath of COVID-19.
5. Sophie Turner

British actress Sophie Turner, who previously lived in the U.S. while married to Joe Jonas, has returned to the U.K. She identified gun violence, the reversal of Roe v. Wade, and escalating political unrest as key factors. Turner expressed feeling trapped in America and couldn’t envisage raising children under such conditions.
6. Richard Gere

Richard Gere now lives in Spain with his family, explaining that his wife (pictured together) is Spanish and their children benefit from a bilingual upbringing. While his move wasn’t directly because of Trump, he acknowledged the U.S. is heading in a troubling direction. Gere said he remains engaged in American politics despite living abroad.
7. Courtney Love

Courtney Love has settled in the U.K. and applied for British citizenship. While she didn’t explicitly link her move to Trump, she harshly criticized his administration at a public event in London. Love compared the culture around Trump to ’emperor-core,’ calling it frightening and toxic.
8. Robin Wright

Robin Wright has been based in the U.K. for several years and says she prefers the slower pace and greater sense of freedom there. While not directly pointing to Trump, she called America ‘a shitshow.’ Wright highlighted the contrast between life in England and the constant stress and competition she associates with the U.S.
