Mushroom chef Erin Patterson’s legal team has presented to a jury what they referred to as overlooked context in her frustrated messages concerning her former in-laws, asserting that she was merely “venting” to her online acquaintances about her personal difficulties.

The 50-year-old on Thursday faced the Supreme Court in regional Victoria, as she nears the end of a fifth week on trial accused of three murders and one attempted murder.

She faces allegations of intentionally poisoning her separated husband’s parents, along with his aunt and uncle, by serving them a beef Wellington infused with toxic death cap mushrooms.

Mandy said police obtained receipts for a “large number of books” that Patterson had purchased from Booktopia which related to diets.

The detective was also questioned about the intense media attention surrounding the case and confirmed that “passwords” were implemented in hospitals due to this scrutiny.

Det Eppingstall said he was updating Victoria Police’s media unit over the course of his investigation and that media had been camped outside Patterson’s home in the weeks after the meal.

He will return to the witness box on Friday, as the trial before Justice Christopher Beale continues.
