The fungus can have a severe impact on immunocompromised people.
Two patients died and four fell seriously ill after all contracting fungal infections while at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital last year.

The Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) has announced an investigation into a series of Aspergillus fungal infections within the hospital’s transplant unit, which occurred between October and December. This development has raised concerns regarding the safety of vulnerable patients.

The SLHD has acknowledged the possibility that the outbreak may be connected to the ongoing $940 million redevelopment project at the hospital, which has been in progress since 2023. The construction activities could be a contributing factor to the fungal presence.

Aspergillus is a known risk for individuals with weakened immune systems, particularly those undergoing organ transplants. These patients are already significantly immunocompromised, making them more susceptible to such infections.

In response to the situation, the ward was closed temporarily to facilitate a thorough investigation. Transplant patients were relocated to ensure their safety, and those potentially at risk were promptly contacted.

A panel of experts, including NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant, decided the ward could be reopened earlier this month after testing and analysis found no increased levels of the fungus remained.

To enhance patient safety, the hospital implemented several measures. These included a comprehensive deep cleaning of the transplant ward, a review of air intake points, upgrades to air filtration systems, and extensive air quality testing. Such steps aim to prevent further occurrences and protect patients’ health.
