A fleet has set sail from Barcelona to the Gaza Strip, carrying humanitarian aid and activists, with Greta Thunberg among them, marking the most significant effort yet to breach the extensive Israeli sea blockade of the Palestinian region.

This initiative comes amid Israel increasing its aggression on Gaza City, restricting food and essential supply deliveries to the northern area of the Palestinian region.

Earlier this month, food experts signaled that the city was facing famine, with half a million people throughout the strip experiencing extreme hunger conditions.

“The real story here is about Palestine. It’s about how people are being intentionally deprived of the most fundamental means to survive,” said Swedish activist Thunberg during a news briefing.

Thunberg stands as one of the most notable individuals in the group, which includes hundreds of activists, politicians like former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, and journalists.

It is not the first time Thunberg has attempted to reach Gaza waters this year.

She was deported by Israel in June when the ship she was travelling on with 11 other people, the Madleen, was stopped by the Israeli military.

An Israeli official stated on Saturday that the nation will soon suspend or reduce humanitarian aid to areas of northern Gaza, escalating its military action against Hamas, following the city’s designation as a combat zone.
