On January 18, a tragic incident unfolded at Neilson Park, near Shark Beach in Vaucluse, marking a day of sorrow for the community.
In a moving tribute to a beloved young member, swimmers of all ages, many of whom cherished fond memories of Nico, gathered at the iconic Sydney beach. Their shared presence on the water served as a heartfelt celebration of his life.
Nico was a spirited under-13 participant in the North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club’s Nippers program. His presence at the club was deeply felt, as he was remembered for his ardent passion for the ocean and his admirable courage, often described as having a “true lion heart.”
In a statement, the North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club fondly recalled, “Nico arrived at Nippers each week with a big smile and a wonderful attitude.”
Described as easy-going and independent, Nico was celebrated for his determination and genuine love for sports, as well as the camaraderie they fostered. His spirit continues to inspire those who knew him.
“He was easy-going, independent, and a true lion heart – determined, with a genuine love for all sports and the kinship they brought.”
Nico died in hospital from his injuries on January 25 after being pulled from the water with serious leg wounds following the shark attack.
Lorena and Juan, said in a statement they were “heartbroken” over his death.
“Nico was a happy, friendly, and sporty young boy with the most kind and generous spirit,” they said.
“He was always full of life and that’s how we’ll remember him.
“We would like to sincerely thank the first responders and the teams at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick for everything they did to care for Nico.”
The junior lifesaver was the first of four shark attack victims in 48 hours on NSW beaches in mid-January.
