Australia’s south will once again feel an icy nip in the air for the rest of the week, as a cold front freezes the region.
Cold nights and mornings are predicted to continue until the weekend ends, with temperatures falling to between -2 and -4 degrees in southeastern Australia, including the capital cities.
Jonathan How, a senior meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology, noted that temperatures in Sydney this morning were below freezing as people began their day.
“It’s currently very windy in Sydney, which makes it exceptionally cold… the temperature feels like it’s around zero at the airport,” he mentioned this morning.
“For Western Sydney, the feels-like temperature is around -1, so very wintry out there.”
In Canberra, the feels-like temperature dropped below freezing to -4 degrees by 7am, increasing slightly to 0.1 degrees by 9am.
At Melbourne Airport, the feels-like temperature was 1.2 degrees at 7am, inching up to 3.8 degrees by 9am.
In Adelaide, the feels-like temperature was 5.8 degrees, rising to 6.6 degrees by 9am.
In Hobart, the feels-like temperature was a near-feezing 1.1 degrees at 7am, barely moving to 1.3 degrees by 9am.
Similar temperatures are expected again tomorrow morning and tonight.
The cold mass brought snow to NSW overnight and it will bring frost to the entire eastern coast, including Queensland.
“We have seen some very healthy snow dumps across the alpine resorts. Also, snow across Oberon last night,” How said.
“We are seeing that snow gradually easing up and contracting to higher territory through today, but we are in for some very frosty nights.
“Widespread frost is expected today across NSW, all the way up into southern Queensland.”
All forecasts point to the cold weather sticking around for the entire weekend, with How telling residents to “rug up”.
