A horrifying incident unfolded in the southeastern United States, where a gunman claimed the lives of eight children in two separate domestic violence shootings. This tragic event marks the deadliest mass shooting in the nation in over two years.

Speaking about the gravity of the situation, Chris Bordelon, spokesperson for the Shreveport Police Department in Louisiana, described the scene as “extensive” and unlike anything most have ever encountered. The victims, who ranged in age from just 1 year old to around 14 years old, included some who were related to the shooter. In total, ten individuals were shot during the attacks.

The harrowing episode concluded with the suspect’s death following a police chase. According to authorities, the gunman, who was an adult male, stole a car in an attempt to flee and was subsequently pursued by law enforcement. During the pursuit, officers engaged the suspect, resulting in his death.

While the suspect’s identity has not been disclosed by police, the impact of this senseless violence shakes the community and serves as a grim reminder of the devastation wrought by domestic violence and gun-related crimes.

The gunman later died after a chase with officers who fired at the suspect, Bordelon said. The suspect stole a car while leaving the scene of the shootings and was followed by police.

Police did not release the name of the suspect but did say he was an adult male.

Officials said they were still gathering details at the crime scenes south of downtown Shreveport – the two homes and a third location.

It was the deadliest mass shooting in the US since eight people were killed in a Chicago suburb in January 2024, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University.

At a news conference outside the residence where one of the shootings occurred, officials appeared stunned, requesting patience and prayers from the community as they sorted through multiple crime scenes.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and US House Speaker Mike Johnson, who is from Shreveport, said in separate statements that they were heartbroken and praised law enforcement for their response.

“We’re holding the victims, their families and loved ones, and our Shreveport community close in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” Johnson said in a statement.
