Police hunt man who fired shots after car chase through Sydney's west

A western Sydney suburb was placed under lockdown overnight as police launched a manhunt for an armed suspect.

The incident escalated from a routine traffic violation, and authorities were still searching for the fugitive this afternoon.

The suspect, who was last seen in Guildford donning high-visibility clothing, remains at large.

“A vehicle with irregular number plates executed an illegal right turn,” explained Chief Inspector Rick Agius.

The vehicle, a utility truck, was first noticed in South Wentworthville and led police on a nine-kilometer pursuit before being cornered by officers.

However, the driver managed to flee, discharging five gunshots into the air as he escaped.

“The male in my opinion is totally irresponsible and stupid in his actions by discharging a firearm in a public place,” Agius said.

Officers tried to stop the Nissan Ute at 9.20pm yesterday in South Wentworthville for a traffic offence.

“We’re very lucky that no one was injured or killed.”

After a six hour manhunt and a search of the vehicle, authorities are no closer to figuring out who this man is and are hoping a member of the public can identify him.
