A train driver’s quick reflexes have helped avoid disaster, after an elderly driver became stuck on the tracks in Adelaide.

The motorist received a fine following the close call in Bowden shortly after 6:30 pm yesterday, which led to a quick reaction from law enforcement and train staff at Hawker Street.

The man in his 70s took a wrong turn, putting his car onto the tracks where it became bogged in rubble.

“I (was) just worried… he can’t pull it out because he’s stuck,” one witness said.

The driver, realising his imminent danger, exited his car and called for help.

Fortunately, the oncoming train’s operator noticed the vehicle and sounded the horn multiple times as a caution before eventually halting, according to a bystander who spoke to 9News.

“The train did stop in time but was beeping for quite some time before he got there,” the witness said.
