A man has been taken into custody on the NSW Central Coast after a police vehicle was hit during a supposed domestic violence incident, which led to a search for the suspect.

Police responded to a residence on Goorama Avenue in San Remo at 5am today following reports of a man brandishing a knife and standing in the street.

Police shot a Taser at the man to arrest him, but he got into his car and drove towards officers, ramming into their vehicle.

At least one shot was fired towards the man as he drove away from the scene in a grey Mitsubishi station wagon, with the number plate EVM91J.

A manhunt followed throughout San Remo, Budgewoi and Charmhaven to locate him.

A man was arrested around 7.30am in Gorokan.

NSW Police confirmed a woman was taken from the home in San Remo to hospital for assessment.

Her condition is not yet known.

Support is available from the National Sexual Assault, Domestic and Family Violence Counselling Service at 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732).
