MELBOURNE, Fla. – Melbourne police, responding to a report of possible gunfire early Sunday, discovered an individual who seemed to have been shot and who, unfortunately, did not survive the injuries, the police department reported.
Officers were dispatched around 1:51 a.m. to Vernon Place and East New Haven Avenue concerning the gunshot report, per a news release by the Melbourne Police Department.
Upon arrival, police reported finding an unresponsive individual with what seemed to be a gunshot wound, noting that despite the concerted efforts of officers and Melbourne Fire Rescue to administer medical aid, the person succumbed to the injuries.
A person of interest was identified and police believed there was no further outstanding threat to the public at the time of this report, the release states. Neither the identity of the person of interest nor of the victim were immediately available.
