A south-west Sydney family have been forced to abandon their dream home following a three-year battle with toxic mould that left their kids hospitalised and their insurance claim up in the air.
The Karagiannis’ property in Roselands was once their dream home, however, it was fenced off three years ago after a freak storm, during Sydney’s wettest year, left the house plagued with mould.

Panagiota Karagiannis, the homeowner, expressed her frustration with the persistent issues her house has caused.

“Initially, neither of our children had asthma, but they began experiencing breathing problems,” she explained.

“Our daughter, Athena, frequently ended up in pediatric care,” Panagiota continued.

“Additionally, my husband, who has a compromised immune system, began facing serious chest infections,” she added.

The family made an insurance claim in September 2022 that was initially denied before the family pushed back and received partial acceptance.

Experts examined their residence and confirmed the presence of unusual mould growth, Panagiota noted.

It ultimately took the family two years to secure new housing arrangements.

They noticed an immediate improvement in their daughter’s health, however, more stress came along.

“We were moved 13 times in 7 months.”

The house was eventually stripped by the insurance company, but when the family moved back in, they say they started getting sick again.

The company is now working with the family on a knock-down rebuild.

They then hired their own mould consultant.

”We are deeply sympathetic, we are committed to supporting them to resolve what has been a highly complex claim,” Hollard Insurance said in a statement.

“If it had been done in a timely manner, I think the frame of the house could have been saved, and I think my husband’s health could have been saved,” Panagiota said.

“I want there to be reform in the industry, I want there to be better knowledge in the industry.

“I want something good to come from what we’ve been through.”
