Munich Airport in Germany experienced a temporary shutdown following a series of drone sightings, marking the latest instance of unexplained drone activities disrupting a European aviation center.

According to an airport statement, 17 flights were halted shortly after 10 pm on Thursday (6 am, Friday AEST), impacting close to 3,000 passengers.

Moreover, 15 incoming flights had to be redirected to other German cities such as Stuttgart, Nuremberg, and Frankfurt, in addition to Vienna in neighboring Austria, as stated in the report.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen commented that, although authorities have not determined who is responsible for the drone incidents in Denmark, “it is possible to ascertain that there is chiefly one nation posing a security threat to Europe — and that is Russia.”

The Kremlin has denied involvement in the drone sightings, as well as that it violated Estonian airspace.

Munich, a historic metropolis with a population exceeding 1 million, was already on high alert after its famous Oktoberfest beer festival experienced a temporary closure earlier in the week because of a bomb threat.
