A police officer in Sydney could lose his job after being charged with common assault for allegedly pepper-spraying a fare evader last year.

The officer was patrolling Central Station when he saw a man allegedly jump over ticket barriers on May 27 last year.

After the man evaded police, a pursuit on foot occurred before the man was arrested at Broadway nearby.

It was during the arrest the police officer allegedly used pepper spray before other officers helped restrain the man.

An internal review was subsequently carried out to evaluate the appropriateness of the police’s actions. As a consequence, a 36-year-old senior constable from a specialized unit faced charges of common assault.

In a statement, NSW Police also confirmed his employment with the force is now under review.

The man is due to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on October 23.
