A man who broke into a stranger’s house in Perth has died after being Tasered by police.

Officers were called to a house in Embleton following reports a man had broken in and damaged the property.

Police say they found the man in the backyard and, after trying to negotiate with him, deployed a stun gun in an attempt to arrest him.

“Officers attempted to negotiate with and detain the man, but he continued to behave in an aggressive manner,” a Western Australia Police spokesperson said.

“A Taser was deployed by an officer and the man was restrained, and he appeared to suffer a medical episode.”

Police say they “immediately” performed CPR on the man until paramedics arrived and he was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, however he died at the facility.

An investigation into the incident has been launched.

“Due to the circumstance of the man’s death, officers from the Major Crime Division and Internal Affairs Unit will investigate his death as a death in police custody,” police said.

“A report will be prepared for the coroner.”
