Thousands of people flocked to Bethlehem’s Manger Square on Christmas Eve as families there and at other sites across the Holy Land heralded a much-needed boost of holiday spirit, after two years of subdued celebrations because of the war in Gaza.

At the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV delivered his inaugural Midnight Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, captivating the congregation with a sermon that celebrated the profound “wisdom” of the Christmas narrative. The Pope reflected on the miraculous birth of Jesus as a symbol of salvation for humanity.

“In the face of the suffering of the poor, (God) sends one who is defenseless to be the strength to rise again,” the first U.S. pope told a packed basilica.

Across the globe on Wednesday, people embraced Christmas traditions that extended beyond church doors. In New York City, ice-skaters glided across festive rinks, while in Northern Ireland, brave souls plunged into chilly sea waters for charitable swims.

Meanwhile, along Florida’s Space Coast, hundreds of Santas swapped sleighs for surfboards. At Cocoa Beach, surfers donned Santa suits and rode the waves, continuing a beloved tradition that has delighted onlookers for 17 years.

Thousands of spectators flocked to the beach, many clad in their own festive attire. They danced to live music and competed in a holiday costume contest, adding to the event’s lively atmosphere.

This annual spectacle serves a greater purpose, as it raises funds for the Florida Surf Museum and supports a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting cancer patients.
