A hidden train station abandoned in the 1970s following local outcry is set to be redeveloped as part of a state government housing boost.

The NSW state government has announced it will revive the Woollahra train station to cater for 10,000 new homes in Sydney’s east.

Woollahra’s railway station was first planned nearly 50 years ago but was never completed.

The government-led housing boost aims to help young people who are locked out of the Sydney property market.

Sydney is “losing twice as many young people as it is gaining”, according to Minns.

Minister for Housing and Homelessness Rose Jackson said the extra 10,000 homes will unlock a fresh area in Sydney for homebuyers.

“For many, the Australian dream has become unattainable, and without change, we risk becoming a city devoid of future generations. My vision is for our city to dream once more—envisioning affordable homes for everyone and a prosperous future for each family,” she stated.

“This is why we’re committing to a specific share of affordable housing right from the beginning, ensuring that individuals from diverse backgrounds have equal opportunities to reside in quality homes near resources and opportunities.

“We are ready to face opposition to create more housing in areas where the necessary space and infrastructure already exist. This new station is a logical step forward.”
