Two prominent players from the Australian Football League (AFL) find themselves embroiled in legal trouble as Victoria Police have brought charges against them following their alleged participation in a violent altercation at a pub. The incident, which took place nearly a year ago, resulted in two men being hospitalized, though one of the athletes is fervently asserting his absence from the scene.

Richmond star Dion Prestia and Melbourne’s Steven May, both aged 33, are facing charges connected to the disturbance that occurred at a Sorrento pub on December 27 of last year. The altercation reportedly involved two separate groups and resulted in serious injuries.

The clash, which unfolded at approximately 2 a.m., has led to significant consequences for the two players, now under the scrutiny of both the law and the public. However, Dion Prestia has come forward with a strong declaration of his innocence, distancing himself from the events of that night.

In a statement, Prestia addressed the charges of recklessly causing serious injury, which allege his involvement in a Boxing Day altercation in 2024 at Sorrento. “I was not involved in the fight. I was not even physically present when it apparently took place,” he asserted. “I deny that I am guilty of these offences and will strenuously defend these charges.”

As the case unfolds, the sporting world and fans await further developments, with Prestia’s resolute denial adding an intriguing layer to the unfolding legal drama.

“I was not involved in the fight. I was not even physically present when it apparently took place. I deny that I am guilty of these offences and will strenuously defend these charges.

“As I have now been charged, it would be inappropriate for me to say anything further.”

Richmond also released a statement this morning, saying their player was entitled to be assumed innocent until proven otherwise.

“Dion strenuously denies any wrongdoing and will defend himself accordingly. As with any member of the community, he is entitled to the presumption of innocence,” the club said.

“The Club will continue to support him as the legal process takes its course. He will return to pre-season training next month.”

Melbourne Football Club and Steven May have not commented since the charges were laid.

Prestia has played 277 games since beginning his career in 2011 and has won three premierships at Richmond.

May has played 250 games after debuting in the same year as Prestia, and won a premiership in 2021 with Melbourne.
