Wild weather to batter parts of Queensland as storm clean-up continues

Thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and flash flooding are threatening to hamper New Year’s celebrations across northern Queensland, as residents on the Gold Coast continue the clean-up following a ferocious Christmas Day storm.

Northern Queensland is bracing for a deluge as the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) forecasts several hundred millimeters of rain in the upcoming days, leading to potential monsoonal flooding.

The BoM has issued flood alerts across a broad swath of the country’s north, stretching from the eastern regions of the Northern Territory to various parts of Queensland, including its western, northern, and eastern sections. This heavy rainfall could potentially trigger riverine flooding in these areas.

Amidst the weather chaos, officials are preparing to assess and clean up the aftermath as soon as conditions permit. However, access to certain areas remains restricted, delaying damage assessment and recovery efforts.

Meanwhile, strong winds are complicating efforts to dismantle a precarious crane, with concerns that the operation could take several days. The situation is especially tense as the crane is now leaning northward, posing a significant risk to the northern section of a nearby caravan park.

“The entire crane is leaning towards the north, placing the northern area of the caravan park in jeopardy,” stated Acting Inspector Peter Venz from Queensland Police.
