A huge sinkhole has opened up at a popular football field in Melbourne’s north-east, sparking an investigation.

Yesterday afternoon, a section of turf gave way at AJ Burkitt Oval in Heidelberg, and the situation persisted into the night.

Curious residents gathered at the scene before police cordoned off the area, with officials advising the public to keep their distance.

Locals posted images of the sinkhole to social site Reddit. (Reddit)

Interestingly, the oval is situated near the site where boring machines are tunneling for the North East Link project, though the precise cause of the sinkhole has yet to be determined.

In a social media statement, Banyule City Council acknowledged the sinkhole and noted it is collaborating with relevant agencies to evaluate the incident and decide on future actions.

People have been urged to steer clear. (9News)

Vic Emergency cautioned that the sinkhole could expand and reiterated the importance of staying clear of the area.

The organization assured that they would provide an update at 5 p.m. this evening, unless there are significant developments beforehand.

No further plans on repairing the sinkhole have been announced.

9news.com.au has contacted the North East Link Project for comment.
