There will be 35,000 more migrants in Australia this financial year than previously expected, driven by fewer foreigners on temporary visas leaving, according to the budget papers.

After a significant surge in immigration post-pandemic, where numbers soared to over 550,000 in 2022-23 due to the lifting of border restrictions, there has been a notable decline in these figures.

Recent projections estimate net overseas migration to reach 295,000 by 2025-26, and 245,000 in 2026-27. These numbers have been revised upwards from previous estimates of 260,000 for the current financial year and 225,000 for 2026-27.

“Australia should always be a nation that values individuals for who they are, irrespective of their origin,” he remarked.

“When people express their love for Australia, they are embracing modern Australia—our multicultural identity,” he added.

Last month, Opposition Leader Angus Taylor vowed to tighten migration policies, proposing the introduction of an “Australian values” test, the reinstatement of temporary protection visas, increased funding for deportations, and an unspecified reduction in overall migration numbers.

David Farley, a new MP for One Nation, initially indicated that a net overseas migration figure of 306,000 might be acceptable, but later clarified that “One Nation will cap immigration at 130,000 per year.”
