The family of a young attorney tragically killed during a weekend morning will not see justice served, as the driver suspected of causing the accident has passed away. Zisi Kokotatsios, a ride-share driver, faced allegations of using his phone illegally when he was on his way to pick up a passenger around 4 a.m. on March 17, 2024. It was alleged that as he drove through Tamarama in Sydney’s east, he struck 28-year-old lawyer Mitch East and failed to stop to provide help. Despite emergency services’ attempts to revive Mr. East, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Driver charged in fatal crash dies before trial
Kokotatsios (pictured) was slated for trial after entering a not guilty plea to charges of dangerous driving resulting in death and not stopping to assist after a fatal accident. However, the Downing Centre District Court was informed on Friday that the 65-year-old had died. Consequently, all criminal charges against him, including negligent driving causing death and illegal mobile phone use while driving, were withdrawn, and the case was dismissed. Kokotatsios passed away on November 11, with a funeral taking place at Rookwood Cemetery later that month, as noted in an online obituary. His legal proceedings experienced several delays following his arrest in March 2024, and it was approximately 16 months later that he pleaded not guilty at the Downing Centre Local Court.
