Authorities are delving into the suspicious death of a woman, whose body was found on a well-frequented beach to the southwest of Melbourne.
A passerby stumbled upon the woman’s remains at Geelong’s Eastern Beach around 11:20 am today and immediately notified the lifeguards on duty.
In response, emergency teams, comprising police and paramedics, rushed to the location to assess the situation.
The police force, including specialist homicide detectives, is currently engaged in efforts to establish the woman’s identity and determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
Additionally, council officials are examining CCTV recordings and assisting law enforcement with their inquiries.
Those who might have pertinent information are encouraged to reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
Greater Geelong Council chief executive Ali Wastie said the situation was “tragic” as she commended the efforts of the people involved.
“The lifeguards responded quickly and immediately notified emergency services,” she said.
“I want to praise the first responders for their prompt efforts in this tragic situation, and also recognise the community member who alerted the lifeguards.”
Eastern Beach is a popular location for swimmers and families due to its shark-proof sea bath, children’s pool, park and playgrounds.
