A vigilant air patrol unit observed a silver sedan speeding recklessly on the freeway around 12:40 am local time (3:40 pm AEDT) after it was seen involved in street racing in a different neighborhood, according to a statement from the Tampa Police Department.
The Florida Highway Patrol intercepted the vehicle and attempted a PIT maneuver, a tactic where the rear fender is nudged to cause the car to spin out, but the attempt was unsuccessful.
In recent years, some states and local law enforcement agencies have advocated for limiting high-speed car chases to safeguard both the public and police officers.
In response to an increase in fatal accidents, a 2023 study funded by the US Department of Justice recommended that pursuits be infrequent, stating that the risks often surpass the necessity of an immediate arrest.
However, Florida’s highway patrol has eased restrictions on car pursuits and PIT maneuvers, methods that the Justice Department-supported report described as “high-risk” and “controversial.”
