A 20-year-old Adelaide woman has died after being struck by a car on North East Road in Hillcrest, prompting an urgent police investigation.

The incident occurred just before midnight, with CCTV footage capturing the collision.

According to South Australia Police, the victim was hit by a silver sedan, and the driver fled the scene without stopping.

“What happened at Hillcrest last night is a tragic situation where a young woman’s lost her life,” Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said.

Footage of the event seems to reveal a police car arriving mere seconds afterward; however, top police officials maintain that the suspect’s car was neither being pursued nor followed.

“There was no police chase. The police were not in pursuit of that vehicle. It happened by coincidence that officers were in close proximity at the time,” Stevens stated.

An officer started CPR on the victim, but she could not be revived.

The local community has expressed fury at the driver, with one person describing their actions as “atrocious. Totally heartless”.

Another witness added, “It’ll be better in the long run if he turns himself in, but he’s obviously a coward”.

Authorities are working to reconstruct the victim’s last actions prior to the collision and are urging anyone with dashcam footage or relevant details to get in touch with them.

Authorities are urging the driver to come forward.

While the victim is understood to be from overseas, details regarding her living arrangements in Australia are unclear.
