The crowdfunding page, set up by a close friend of the family, identifies the children involved as August, Hugo, and Goldie.
By 10 a.m. on Monday, the fundraiser had surpassed its initial target of NZ$100,000 (approximately $86,878), reaching over NZ$140,000 (about $121,630).
The friend, who organized the page, expressed her intent to establish a “safety net” for the children’s mother.
“Our intention is to grant her the time and security to grieve privately, without the added burden of financial worries,” she explained.
“While we cannot heal her broken heart, we can envelop her in community support. We invite you to help provide this solace and practical assistance during her darkest hours,” she appealed to potential donors.
Inspector Ross Grantham, Manawatu’s area commander, confirmed that the bodies of two children were retrieved from the location on Sunday evening, with family members present to honor them with a traditional blessing, or karakia.
“Work is ongoing to locate the body of a third child, while the body of an adult has already been removed, Grantham said.
“The family of the deceased are devastated at the loss of their loved ones.
“They are thankful and very grateful for the support and concern they are receiving from the community.”
Investigators would focus on recovering the third child on Monday and “completing a meticulous and thorough scene examination”, Grantham said.
“This tragedy has shocked not only the local community, but also many people across the country.
“Our investigators remain determined to find answers to as many questions as we can.”
