The elusive manhunt for a fugitive, believed to be Freeman, has concluded after 216 days, as Victoria Police officers reportedly shot and killed him. Commissioner Mike Bush indicated that while formal identification is pending, evidence strongly suggests it was indeed Freeman.

Freeman had vanished into the wilderness after fatally shooting two police officers—Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, 59, and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart-Hottart, 35—and severely wounding another during a confrontation in the alpine town of Porepunkah on August 26.

The incident occurred when officers from the sexual offences and child investigation division were ambushed while executing a search warrant at Freeman’s property on Rayner Track.

Acting on a public tip-off, tactical units surrounded a shipping container in the border town of Walwa, near New South Wales, leading to a tense three-hour standoff that ended with Freeman being shot dead by police.
