A major highway on Queensland‘s Sunshine Coast has been closed after a truck carrying an excavator crashed into an overhead bridge.

Emergency crews responded to an incident on the Bruce Highway at Tanawha following a crash that occurred around 8:45 am (AEST).

According to police reports, a truck traveling southbound collided with the underside of the Ilkey Road overpass while transporting an excavator.

The overpass is marked with a vehicle height restriction of 5.4 meters.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the accident.

Authorities have implemented several detours, and it is anticipated that the southbound lanes of the highway will remain closed for the majority of the day.

According to government transport update website Qld Traffic, nearby Ilkley Road is also closed and diversions are in place via Maroochydore Road southbound.

Drivers are being warned to brace themselves for significant delays.

Sunshine Coast Police senior sergeant Scott Wiggins said the crash appeared to have caused “significant damage” to the bridge.

“The damage is currently being inspected by engineers,” Wiggins said.
