The United States indicated that tariffs could rise to 25% on June 1st if an agreement to purchase Greenland was not reached, according to statements made by the President.

The Republican president appeared to indicate that he was using the tariffs as leverage to force talks with Denmark and other European countries over the status of Greenland, a semiautonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark that he regards as critical to US national security. This sets up a potentially dangerous test of US partnerships in Europe.

In response to this move, Representative Don Bacon from Nebraska, a Republican, emphasized the need for Congress to reclaim tariff authority to prevent it from being solely at the president’s discretion.

European officials have reiterated that decisions regarding Greenland rest solely with Denmark and Greenland. In response, Denmark announced plans to bolster its military presence in Greenland in collaboration with its allies.

During a visit to Copenhagen, Senator Chris Coons highlighted the strong alliance between the United States and Denmark, stating, “Denmark is one of our closest allies.”

He further questioned, “If our actions cause Denmark to doubt our reliability as a NATO ally, why would other nations trust us or want to align with us?”
