His reasoning is simple: since the Chinese export three times more goods to America than they import, they stand to lose more in a trade conflict. By imposing severe tariffs, like the recent 145 percent increase on Chinese goods, he believes the pressure will force them to back down.

“China needs the United States of America,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at Friday’s news briefing.

The U.S. Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, has likened China to a gambler facing a losing streak. “China needs access to our markets and our consumers,” Bessent remarked, confident in his upcoming trip to Switzerland, bolstered by the unwavering support and trust of the president.

Moreover, Moon, a former diplomat in China, pointed out that the tariff war affects both nations equally. “Both countries heavily rely on their trade relationship and have maneuvered themselves into a tight spot,” she observed.

Jens Eskelun, president of the EU Chamber of Commerce in China, expressed relief that US and Chinese officials were meeting.

“So good,” he said, pointing to the Vatican conclave that just picked a new pope as inspiration.

“Lock them in a room and then hopefully white smoke will come out.”
