A 53-year-old British man drove his minivan into a group of Liverpool soccer fans who were celebrating the city’s team winning the Premier League championship on Monday and was subsequently arrested, police reported.

Merseyside Police said they were investigating reports that multiple pedestrians had been hit.

A social media video seemed to capture a grey minivan hitting at least one pedestrian before swerving into a larger crowd, cutting a path through the group and pushing individuals along the street before eventually halting.

Liverpool Football Club said it is in contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident. We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident,” it stated on X.

Footage shared by Reuters news agency showed emergency services tending to people, some being carried into ambulances on stretchers.

Rashid said after the car struck the initial victims, it came to a halt and the crowd charged the vehicle and began smashing windows.

“But then he put his foot down again and just plowed through the rest of them, he just kept going,” Rashid said. “It was horrible. And you could hear the bumps as he was going over the people.”

Rashid said it looked deliberate and he was in shock and disbelief.

“My daughter started screaming and there were people on the ground,” he said. “They were just innocent people, just fans going to enjoy the parade.”

North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said it is supporting an incident in Liverpool city center following reports of a road traffic collision.

“We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services. Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible,” it said in a press release.
