Record dry 2025 plunges states into worst drought in 'decades'

Farmers are urgently asking for assistance as a major drought continues to impact regions in Victoria and Tasmania, resulting in empty dams and barren fields.
Weatherzone reported last week that areas within both states, along with sections of Tasmania, experienced an unprecedented dry start to the year.

“Some regions in southern Australia recorded their driest first four months ever,” noted the weather expert.

“However, no amount of new troughs can help when there’s no water available today. We need substantial investment in immediate financial aid and initiatives that address the actual on-ground conditions.”

The group wants the upcoming state budget to take on the task of supporting farmers.

The VFF warned that Victoria could fall behind, and without prompt action, the consequences for regional communities and the state’s agricultural supply chains could be severe.

Last month, the South Australian government passed an additional $55 million in drought support, following an $18 million announcement in November last year.

The new funding injection offers $1500 rural support grants to affected households.

“This practical assistance ensures our rural communities aren’t faced with unpaid invoices, skipping medical appointments, giving up on school opportunities, or quietly going without,” Premier Peter Malinauskas said.

“Helping our farmers who feed our state, get through every day, and plan a way forward through these challenging and dry times is exactly what this program aims to do.”
