A rare $1 million reward is being offered to help solve the 1981 cold case sex assault and murder of a 25-year-old Melbourne woman.

In the early hours of July 3, 1981, Haroula Kipouridou was found lifeless in a stalled elevator around 2:30 a.m., shortly after her colleagues had dropped her off at her mother’s residence in the Richmond housing complex.

Detective Acting Sergeant Leigh Prados revealed that the young vocalist had suffered a brutal attack, resulting in her being beaten, strangled, and left partly clothed on the floor.

“This is a plea to anyone’s conscience,” Prados stated. “As we age and face our own mortality, it’s important for witnesses to reconsider what they know, what they might have seen or heard, and to share that information now. It’s a matter of now or never.”

At the time of her tragic death, the 25-year-old was engaged and performed at a Greek tavern on Fitzroy’s Gertrude Street.

Though the tavern no longer operates, investigators are urging the public to recall the events of that fateful night in 1981, appealing for any individuals who may have interacted with Kipouridou to step forward with information.

While the business no longer exists, investigators are hoping members of the public can cast their minds back to 1981, urging anyone who interacted with her on the night of her death to come forward.

“We will never, ever, stop trying to find you,” Prados said.

“We will keep looking for you, try to hold you responsible for what you did.”
