According to sources familiar with the operations, they were also monitoring Iran’s senior political and military figures, who seldom gathered with the ayatollah, the country’s supreme leader for nearly 40 years.

Recently, they identified a window of opportunity. Key Iranian leaders, including Khamenei, had scheduled meetings for Saturday morning at distinct locations within a Tehran compound that houses offices for the ayatollah, the Iranian presidency, and the national security apparatus.
