Eric told Ben Fordham on 2GB radio he heard the shots at around 11.30am local time while he was on his way to lunch in Uvalde.
“My business is literally behind the school,” he said.
“There’s a funeral home right across the school and the funeral home ladies were screaming, ‘Be careful, he’s shooting, he’s shooting!’
“We’re all in mourning, the whole neighbourhood, the whole state of Texas and the town.”
Police have confirmed the shooter died after exchanging gunfire with officers.
“We’re all just in disbelief of what happened,” Eric said.
“My aunt is a fourth grade teacher there, I got nieces and nephews that go to that same school.”
The shooting at Robb Elementary marks the deadliest primary school shooting in the US since the massacre at Sandy Hook in 2012 which killed 26 children and teachers.
Robb Elementary School was due to break for school holidays on Thursday.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the gunman, named as Salvador Ramos, entered the school with a handgun and possibly a rifle.
He reportedly shot his grandmother before heading to the elementary school.
“It is being reported that the subject shot his grandmother right before he went into the school,” Abbott said.
Uvalde High School is approximately seven minutes from Robb Elementary school.
