An 18-year-old girl has been left with “life-changing” head injuries after a freak incident at a UK fair on Sunday (AEST).

The woman was taken to hospital after her hair got caught in a fun fair ride at the Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show in Southampton, England.

Reports from the UK say first aid assistance was offered by attendees at the show with medical training, who revealed the woman had experienced a “degloving injury”.

One woman told the BBC of the scene that unfolded after the incident occurred.

“One of the girl’s friends came down and said how serious it was and some of us offered assistance,” she said.

“It’s very shocking it could happen on a fairground ride that young children go on. This must never happen again.”

The organisers of the show released a statement on their Facebook page this morning saying they were fully cooperating with enquiries.

“The unfortunate incident that happened at the show last evening is being investigated by the relevant authorities,” it said.

“Netley Marsh Steam & Craft Show Ltd are cooperating with all parties involved.”

The Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show began in 1971 and has been held annually ever since.

The event showcases a display of classic cars and steam engines, alongside a “diverse array of entertainment”, as described by the event’s official website.
