Emergency services were dispatched to Wally Tew Reserve in Melbourne’s Ferntree Gully at approximately 4:45 p.m.
A 17-year-old cricketer, while practicing in the nets, was struck in the head and neck by a ball delivered from an automated bowling machine.
On-site, the teenager received immediate attention from both an ambulance crew and Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedics.
He was transported in critical condition to Monash Medical Centre in Clayton, where he remains on life support.
His family, including his parents and siblings, are keeping a vigil at his hospital bedside.
In the aftermath of the incident, flowers have been placed near the nets as a tribute.
The teenager, who turned 17 a few weeks ago, is believed to be a promising young cricket player who has won several awards at Ferntree Gully Cricket Club.
Ringwood and District Cricket Association chair Michael Finn said he was aware of the incident and that his thoughts are with the player and his family.
Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria have been contacted for comment.
It’s understood support is being offered to those in need.
