Authorities Say Parents and Six Children Found in Burning Home Died in Murder-Suicide

A Michigan family discovered dead after a fire tore through their home was the victim of an apparent murder-suicide, authorities have confirmed.

Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, his wife, Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39, and the couple’s six children, who ranged in age from five to 15, were found dead Friday morning inside their $750,000 residence in Grand Haven Township.

Officials had first described the deadly scene as “suspicious” after investigators determined the victims had sustained gunshot wounds before flames engulfed parts of the property.

In an update Monday, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said investigators believe Kristopher shot and killed Amanda and all six children before setting multiple fires inside the family home.

Authorities have not yet determined exactly how the fires were ignited, and arson specialists with Michigan State Police are continuing to examine the scene as part of the investigation.

Deputies said Amanda and the children’s deaths have been classified as homicides, while Kristopher’s death has been ruled a suicide.

Investigators said four of the children were Kristopher’s biological children, while two had been adopted by the couple.

The children have not been publicly identified. Police said the family included four boys, ages 15, 12, 11 and five, as well as two 11-year-old daughters.

The family’s pets also died after inhaling smoke from the fires, Fox 17 reported. It is unclear how many there were.

The update comes just hours after it was revealed that the family was rocked by two tragedies before they died.

Amanda’s parents, Becky and Steve Lawwill, lost a son, Allston Lawwill, six years ago to an accidental fentanyl overdose.

Allston, 28, started using cocaine and opioids during the COVID-19 pandemic and quickly became addicted, WSYM-TV reported.

Just months after, Allston was living in Lansing without his wife, Kassandra, and their three children.

He was found dead on November 25, 2020, three days after he died and had his last known communication with his wife.

Amanda and Allston also had a second ‘baby brother’ called Dillan, who died, according to a family fundraising page. Further details on that tragedy have not been shared.

Following the death of her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren, Becky called it ‘such an ugly thing that has happened.’

The oldest, 15, was heading into high school and had recently begun driver’s education.

Last Friday, Grand Haven Area Public Schools offered support to the community.

‘It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge reports of a devastating incident in Grand Haven Township earlier today involving the loss of multiple lives, including several school-aged children,’ Superintendent Kristin Perkowski wrote.

‘Regardless of the details that may emerge, this is a devastating incident and a tragic loss for our community.

‘Our hearts are with all those impacted, and we know many throughout our community may be grieving and struggling to process this news.’

Amanda worked as a substitute teacher for Grand Haven Area Public Schools and was honored by the district in a social media post in January.

‘She was an amazing mother. She loved her kids so much, so much, and Kris did too,’ Becky said of her daughter. ‘This is just such an ugly thing that has happened, all eight of them’

Tributes to the family have also begun pouring in on Facebook.

‘My little sister Mandy, her husband, and my six nieces and nephews,’ Amanda’s sister, Molly Cessna, wrote.

‘Everything’s just blurry. Please continue to pray, friends. Please continue to pray as we try and piece everything together.

‘Our hearts are utterly shattered. Tragic doesn’t even touch it.’

Steve and Becky shared a devastating post with a group photo of the family smiling on the beach.

‘So grateful for the joy they brought into our life. We are just so shattered,’ they wrote.
