WASHINGTON – Jacob Chychrun scored 1:19 into overtime, leading the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night, marking their third consecutive win.

Tom Wilson contributed a goal and two assists, while Aliaksei Protas also scored for Washington. This win followed two road victories against the New York Islanders and Rangers. Dylan Strome added two assists, and Logan Thompson made 17 saves.

Jake Guentzel and Brayden Point scored for Tampa Bay, and Alexei Vasilevskiy had 25 saves. The Lightning have lost three of four.

The game was tied 1-1 after two periods when Point put the Lightning ahead with a power-play goal, deflecting Victor Hedman’s shot past Thompson 1:23 into the third period.

Wilson drew Washington level at 4:56 by netting their first power-play goal of the season. The Capitals had previously missed 10 opportunities, including two in this match.

The Lightning had initially taken a 1-0 lead 7 minutes and 6 seconds into the game. From a faceoff in Washington’s zone, Anthony Cirelli passed to Ryan McDonagh at the left point, who then set up Guentzel at the bottom of the right circle. Guentzel scored quickly, marking his first goal of the season.

Protas equalized the score for Washington with 2:22 remaining in the second period. Connor McMichael retrieved the puck behind the Lightning net and passed it to Protas on the left, who swiftly beat Vasilevskiy, securing his third goal of the season.

The Capitals were without left wing Pierre-Luc Dubois, who left Sunday’s 1-0 win at the New York Rangers with an undisclosed lower-body injury in the third period.

The Lightning’s Max Crozier went to the dressing room early in the second period, leaving Tampa Bay with five defensemen the rest of the way.
