A contractor hit a gas pipe in City Heights and caused a gas leak that led to evacuations and several streets being closed down as a precaution Thursday afternoon. Utility workers were able to make repairs and people were allowed back into their buildings about two hours later, authorities said.

The leak was reported just north of University Avenue on 44th Street just after 12:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

San Diego police evacuated businesses and residences in the area, including those along 44th Street between University Avenue and Polk Avenue, and officers also shut down southbound Fairmount Avenue between University Avenue and Polk Avenue. Firefighters cleared the area around 1:45 p.m. after SDG&E crews controlled the leak, said San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesperson Mónica Muñoz.

San Diego Fire-Rescue initially said the leak involved a “large diameter gas main” but later said on Twitter that it was a 1 1/4-inch gas main. No injuries were reported.

Around 2:45 p.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue said that all homes and businesses had been repopulated.
