Gavin Newsom said “we can only pray” that Nicki Minaj becomes the next White House press secretary after Trump administration officials floated the “Super Bass” singer for the role.
President Donald Trump and Minaj joked about her replacing Katie Zacharia during an event in Michigan over the weekend, where Trump also complimented the rapper’s derriere.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung added fuel to the speculation, posting: “Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary!”
Newsom, a Democrat widely viewed as a potential 2028 presidential candidate, responded on social media: “We can only pray.”
The California governor did not explain why he would welcome the appointment, although he and Minaj have clashed in the political arena before.
In January, the rapper borrowed a tactic associated with Trump and gave the California liberal a new nickname.
“Oh Gavvy pooh, it only gets worse from here for you, buddy,” Minaj wrote on X.
“It’s the end of the road for you, my love. Get on the nearest jet ski & let that beautiful hair blow in the wind. It will make you happier than this race that you will not win. Enjoy life. Peace.”
Minaj also likened Newsom to Tom Cruise, while arguing that his presidential ambitions were “impossible.”

Gavin Newsom appeared to take a positive view of Nicki Minaj potentially becoming White House press secretary, suggesting that “we can only pray” the “Super Bass” singer gets the job.

Trump and Minaj both joked about her replacing Katie Zacharia at an event in Michigan over the weekend.
“Gavin is the cute boy who got everything handed to him b/c of how cute & sexy & hot & smoking he was. Oohhh look @‘m. Sitting there in that suit with the sneakers on. He thinks he’s Tom Cruise only difference is, his next mission IS impossible. He should get another leading role.”
Our News Outlet has contacted both Newsom and the White House for comment.
Before the rally, Minaj offered her views on politics during a conversation with Cheung on Sunday.
The pair spoke aboard Air Force One while traveling to the Michigan rally. Cheung later shared a clip of their conversation and suggested Minaj could become Trump’s new press secretary following Zacharia’s departure earlier this month.

Trump’s trusted aide wrote: “Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary! @NICKIMINAJ.”
Minaj reshared Cheung’s post with two emojis—an American flag and a laughing face with a bead of sweat—while offering no clear answer about the proposal.
Among Cheung’s questions was how Minaj, who wore a $6,000 Gucci suit for the event, viewed the state of the economy under President Trump.
Minaj replied: “Well, we have a president who understands economics first of all. You know, I’ve said before that the president is, naturally, a businessman. He’s worked his way out of not having a dollar left in the bank.”

Nicki Minaj appeared with White House Communications Director Steven Cheung in a video he shared on X.

Minaj responded to Cheung’s post by sharing it with only two emojis, an American flag and a laughing face with a bead of sweat
She continued: ‘If he can do that himself, with his own finances, surely he knows what to do with the country.’
Touting Trump’s foreign policy acumen, Minaj gushed: ‘He’s tough internationally. He tells them what we need, not what they need.’
Ahead of Trump’s rally, Minaj told Our News Outlet: ‘This election is the most important midterm election of our lifetimes.’
‘We need to make sure that our great President has a great team in Congress to work with during his final two years in office so he can continue to create great programs like the Trump Accounts, which I am a proud supporter of,’ she added.
Trump is tapping into celebrity star power in the final days of his midterm campaign swing. Other recent guests have included boxers Mike Tyson, Jake Paul, Floyd Mayweather, Evander Holyfield and country music artist Jason Aldean.
En route to Trump’s Sunday afternoon rally in Port Huron, Minaj also touted his work ethic.
‘The man won three elections!’ she exclaimed, continuing, ‘he wakes up at four o’clock in the morning. He outworks people who are half his age.’
‘What does that say about his character? He’s paying it forward. He’s thinking about the other Republicans who have to win in this election. That tells me that he’s a great guy,’ she said while closing her speech.
