California Kidnapping Suspect Fatally Shoots Victim in Suburb as Police Close In

A kidnapping victim locked in the trunk of a car was shot dead in front of police after his alleged captor led officers on a high-speed pursuit through an affluent California suburb, authorities said.

The deadly sequence began Wednesday night in Chino Hills, where what started as a traffic stop exposed an apparent abduction and quickly escalated into a fatal confrontation that left both the victim and the suspected kidnapper dead, according to KTLA.

Disturbing home surveillance video reportedly shows the driver getting out of the vehicle after officers ordered him to do so, then turning and firing into the trunk where the victim was trapped.

Deputies standing only a short distance away immediately returned fire, striking the suspect and killing him at the scene.

The victim and the driver, neither of whom has been publicly identified, were both pronounced dead where the confrontation occurred. A third man, seen on video climbing out of the passenger side with his hands raised, was taken into custody.

Investigators have not released a motive, but neighbors told KTLA the victim was a local homeowner who was shot by the suspects after they allegedly attempted to break into his property.

“It seems to me these people knew each other,” resident Gregory Uthis told the station.

Authorities said the chain of events began shortly after 10 p.m. in the 2100 block of Monteverde Drive, when several 911 callers reported hearing gunshots in the area.

Responding officers with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office heard someone screaming for help and spotted a Nissan they believed could be connected to the incident.

An attempted traffic stop quickly spiraled as the driver refused to pull over and led deputies on a tense chase for nearly a mile.

Unbeknownst to officers at the time, a kidnapping was unfolding inside the vehicle.

The high-speed pursuit came to an end in a driveway on the ritzy 2400 block of Wandering Ridge Drive shortly before 10.30pm.

‘Deputies ordered two occupants out of the vehicle. The passenger did comply,’ department spokesperson Gloria Orejel said, according to KTLA.

Video captured from what appears to be a nearby showed the Nissan’s passenger emerging from the car with his hands raised in the air, as the bright lights of patrol vehicles flashed in the background.

In the next clip, the driver can be seen exiting the vehicle and walking toward the trunk before opening fire on his alleged victim stuffed inside.

Seconds later, smoke from what appeared to be gunfire could be seen slowly spreading through the air.

Both the victim and the driver, whose identities remain unknown, were pronounced dead at the scene. A third man, who was captured on video exiting the passenger side of the vehicle with his hands raised, has been taken into custody

‘The driver exited the vehicle, approached the trunk of the suspect vehicle and fired a shot into a victim that was inside the trunk,’ Orejel told KTLA.

She also revealed that the victim was shot and loaded into the Nissan’s trunk at the same location where neighbors first heard gunshots.

Officials said the unidentified suspect also fired at deputies, according to the outlet.

The driver was killed when deputies returned fire, while the unidentified victim confined inside the trunk was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the fatal exchange.

Authorities have since reassured residents that there is no ongoing threat to the public and that they are not searching for any additional suspects.

But the usually quiet neighborhood was left shaken by the deadly scene, with many demanding answers as they said a crime this disturbing is virtually unheard of in their community.

‘If it’s connected to the one that’s a mile or so away from here, then there’s got to be some connection there,’ resident Uthis told KTLA.

‘So, I don’t know, is it just unique to just a few people? Is it gang-related? Is it something deeper? Bigger? I don’t know,’ he added.

Images from the aftermath showed a stark scene, with crime tape cordoning off the palm tree-lined roads and dozens of evidence markers scattered across the area.

It remains unclear what condition the victim was in after the initial gunshot wound and whether the suspects in the vehicle knew him.

Police have released few details about what sparked the initial shooting and alleged abduction, but warned residents they should expect a heavy police presence in the area as authorities continue investigating and combing through evidence.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office for comment.
