Authorities reported that a suspect seemed to speed up towards a vehicle belonging to a GCPD detective, causing the detective to fire at the suspect and triggering a chase.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — In Glynn County on Monday, an armed robbery suspect got into an accident while trying to escape from the police, which led to injuries requiring hospitalization, according to the Glynn County Police Department (GCPD).

The suspect, Shannon Turner, has been charged with carrying out an armed robbery at the T.J. Maxx store located at 151 Golden Isles Plaza in Brunswick on Sunday, as stated in a police department news release.

Police said during the robbery, Turner handed a note to a cashier at the store, demanding money while he displayed a gun.

Turner then fled the store with approximately $980, according to GCPD.

On Monday at approximately 11:39 a.m., GCPD detectives found the vehicle the police department believes Turner fled the store in, according to the release.

When a detective approached the vehicle near the intersection of Highway 99 and Golden Isles Parkway, police said Turner was inside and “appeared to accelerate directly toward the detective’s vehicle,” the release states.

As a result, the police department said the detective fired a single shot at Turner’s vehicle. Neither Turner or the detective were injured during the encounter. The release notes the detective’s vehicle was not hit by any bullets.

Afterward, Turner fled the area in his vehicle, according to police, which led to a pursuit that lasted several minutes.

The release says the pursuit ended when Tanner lost control of his vehicle and crashed on I-95 South near Mile Marker 35. He was taken into custody and taken to the hospital for injuries he sustained in the crash.

Glynn County Police Chief Scott Ebner has contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for assistance in investigating the officer-involved shooting, according to the release.

GBI responded to the scene and are conducting an investigation into the shooting involving the detective, according to GCPD. Additionally, the GCPD Office of Professional Standards and Accountability will conduct an administrative investigation into the officer-involved shooting to determine whether the officer’s actions were in line with department policy.

Moreover, the Georgia State Patrol investigated the crash involving Tanner.

This investigation is ongoing. Any person with information on this case is encouraged to contact GCPD’s non-emergency number at 912-554-3645 or anonymously via Silent Witness at 912-264-1333.
