Cheaters Are Using AI to Hide Affairs—Warning Signs to Spot

A woman says she uncovered her boyfriend’s alleged cheating after a photo he sent as casual “proof” that he was out for a walk ended up raising more questions than it answered.

The unnamed girlfriend reportedly became uneasy when he did not come back home as expected, prompting her to message him and ask where he had gone.

In response, he sent over a picture of a park close to her house, insisting he was doing nothing more than taking a stroll outdoors.

At first glance, the image looked like a peaceful park snapshot, showing what appeared to be a couple sharing a romantic picnic as the woman fed the man while they sat on a blanket.

But the girlfriend later came to believe the scene may not have been as authentic as it seemed, suspecting the park image had been pulled from Google and digitally manipulated with an AI-generated couple added in, making it harder to trace through a reverse image search.

AI specialist Andrew Hulbert reviewed the photograph and said there were multiple clues suggesting the picnic pair had been artificially placed into an otherwise real-looking outdoor setting.

“The picnic scene stands out as the most questionable image for three key reasons,” Hulbert told Our News Outlet.

Emily Hatton, founder of AI in Agencies, reached a similar conclusion, noting telltale signs such as warped hands, oddly formed picnic objects and sections where the woman’s clothing seemed to blur or blend unnaturally into the background.

Sunil Manjunath, co-founder of Techoor, an online retailer offering technology and digital products, told Our News Outlet: ‘The same tools that let someone create a fake vacation photo can just as easily fake an alibi, like a photo suggesting someone was somewhere they weren’t.

‘As these tools get more realistic and accessible, I believe we’ll see this show up more in everyday relationships, not just public scandals.

‘Asking for a photo as proof now invites something that can look completely authentic. So the real question is changing. It’s no longer “can I see a photo?”, it’s “can I confirm where this photo actually came from?”, and most people don’t know how to do that yet.’

The first warning sign, according to Hulbert, was the noticeable difference between the apparent quality of the couple and the rest of the photograph.

‘The quality of the couple is different to the rest of the picture,’ he said. ‘It’s smeared and softer.’

Hulbert explained that the effect can appear when AI technology combines visual material of differing quality.

‘This is typical of AI because it lifts an image from elsewhere to add to the current picture and sometimes these can be of varying quality,’ he said.

Hatton reached a similar conclusion after comparing the couple with the wider park scene.

‘The couple also look smoother and less detailed than the surrounding scene,’ she said.

The second potential clue was the picnic scene’s lack of clearly defined details.

Hulbert said the woman’s hair appeared to contain strands that blended unnaturally into one another rather than displaying the sharper detail expected from a modern cellphone camera.

‘The woman’s hair looks unusual,’ he said. ‘The hair strands are blending into each other. They almost look mushed together when the quality on a camera phone would usually be higher than this.’

Similar problems appeared around the couple’s arms and among the objects arranged on the blanket.

Hatton said: ‘Around the picnic couple, the hands and the object they’re holding lack clear definition, some of the picnic items have unusual shapes, and parts of the woman’s dress, blanket and grass seem to merge.’

The scene’s improbably polished composition also concerned Hulbert. Rather than resembling a spontaneous moment captured during a walk, it appeared closer to a carefully arranged advertising shoot.

‘It all looks like a magazine photo shoot but low detail,’ he said. ‘It’s also unlikely to catch that perfect pose. It’s too staged.’

The third, and most significant, indication was an apparent inconsistency in focus.

Although the couple was supposedly sitting within the original park scene, their focus and rendering did not appear to match the photographic characteristics of their surroundings.

‘The focus of the couple is different to the rest of the picture,’ Hulbert said. ‘Again, this is often based on the stitching AI uses to create these new pictures.’

Hatton nevertheless cautioned that visual irregularities alone could not establish conclusively that the photograph had been manipulated.

‘These can be signs that people have been added using AI, although the low image quality means I couldn’t confirm it definitively,’ she said.

Photographs can develop strange visual artifacts when they are compressed, resized, screenshotted or repeatedly transmitted through messaging and social-media platforms.

Individually, soft focus, indistinct hair or distorted objects do not prove that AI was involved.

Taken together, however, the inconsistencies made the supposedly innocent picnic scene suspicious enough to warrant closer scrutiny.

The woman shared the picture on Reddit’s ‘Is This AI?’ forum four months ago under the username Dadodidun, writing that her boyfriend had sent it to her earlier that day.

She explained: ‘I asked him where he was since he hasn’t come home. He sent me the pic and told me he was just taking a walk.’

At first, she could not identify exactly what was wrong with the photograph. However, the people shown in the park appeared unnatural enough to make her question whether she was looking at a genuine scene.

‘The vibe just looks completely off,’ she wrote. ‘The people genuinely look fake or am I just completely dumb?’

As the woman continued examining the image, she noticed another apparently strange figure in the background and questioned whether its appearance was evidence of AI manipulation or simply poor picture quality.

She also attempted to examine the location using Google Maps but said she could not see the interior of the area clearly enough to confirm whether the photograph matched it.

Her suspicions were ultimately confirmed for reasons that extended far beyond the peculiar picture.
