A convicted child sex offender, already on the sex offender registry, now faces a new charge of witness tampering. Authorities allege that in October, he attempted to smuggle a letter from jail, instructing his latest victim to cease cooperating with the police.

Matthew “Nate” Boegel, 27, was taken into custody in October for felony sexual abuse of minors and breaching conditions tied to his previous release, following two earlier convictions for child sex offenses, according to The Maine Wire.

Recently, Rockland, Maine police discovered that Boegel had penned a letter intended for his current victim. The letter was given to another inmate, set for release, with the instruction to deliver it to the victim.

Following a swift investigation, law enforcement has now added a witness tampering charge to Boegel’s list of offenses.

Previously, Boegel was found guilty of sexually assaulting two young girls aged 12 and 13 when he was 18, resulting in a mere nine-month jail sentence. Subsequently, while on probation, he was convicted of molesting girls aged 14 to 16 and supplying them with marijuana.

Already listed on Maine’s sex offender registry, Boegel once again defied the terms of his release with his recent October arrest.
