Footage shows moment cops discover Mackenzie Shirilla's smashed car

In a gripping scene captured by body cameras, Ohio police officers raced to the site of a devastating crash involving a vehicle driven by Mackenzie Shirilla, discovering two fatalities among the wreckage.

Mackenzie Shirilla, just 17 at the time, gained notoriety as the ‘hell on wheels’ driver after she propelled her car into a building in Strongsville, a suburb of Cleveland, at a staggering speed of 100 mph. The tragic incident claimed the lives of her boyfriend Dominic Russo, 20, and their mutual friend Davion Flanagan, 19.

Police arrived at the crash location in the early hours of July 31, 2022, to find Shirilla’s Toyota Camry violently torn apart, resting in front of the Plidco Building.

Newly released body camera footage, shared by TMZ, records an officer’s shocked voice stating, “Radio, this car’s split in two,” as he navigates through a field scattered with debris.

Approaching the mangled vehicle, the officer found Shirilla trapped between the driver’s seat and the door, while tragically, the two passengers were confirmed deceased at the scene.

It was determined that the crash had occurred hours earlier, leaving the victims at the scene for an extended period before being discovered.

But soon, the police officer noticed that Shirilla was still breathing, but was unconscious – and tried to tear off the door to rescue her while another police officer tried to cut her passengers out of their seats in the back.

‘Holy smokes, [this is] the last thing you expect to see,’ the police officer could be heard telling other officers at the scene.

‘This is the worst crash I’ve ever seen,’ he later added, after discovering that Shirilla crashed through a sign and split her car in half after hitting into the brick building.

When firefighters arrived on the scene minutes later, the officer tells them that all of the occupants in the vehicle are ‘all young – possibly teenagers’ as he asked for a medical helicopter to rush to the scene to attend to Shirilla.

Firefighters then worked to get the door of the vehicle pried off and pull the teenager out of the vehicle, as she could be heard screaming.

The firefighters then gently lift her onto a stretcher, when she tells officers her name is Mackenzie and one of her friends was Dom.

She was then brought into an ambulance, where she told EMTs her right leg was hurting – while the officer urged others not to tell her that her two friends had been killed.

As officers later worked to investigate what caused the deadly crash, they obtained surveillance footage showing her vehicle hurtling along a quiet road.

The vehicle could then be seen smashing through a business sign and slamming into the side of the building.

At trial, prosecutors argued the crash was no accident and pointed to video evidence they said showed a deliberate action and not a loss of control.

Judge Nancy Margaret Russo, who presided over the case, agreed.

‘This was not reckless driving – this was murder,’ she said when delivering her verdict in 2023. ‘She had a mission, and she executed it with precision. The decision was death.’

The judge described Shirilla’s actions as ‘controlled, methodical, deliberate, intentional, and purposeful,’ concluding that she intended to kill the young men.

She was convicted on multiple counts, including aggravated vehicular homicide and felonious assault, and sentenced to a lengthy prison term with the possibility of parole.

The case drew national attention, fueled in part by disturbing details about Shirilla’s behavior before the crash.

At one point, she posted a photo on TikTok with the caption: ‘I’m just one of those girls that can do a lot of drugs and not die.’

During emotional court proceedings, family members of the victims rejected the idea that the crash was anything but intentional.

‘No one wanted this to be a murder, or to punish Mackenzie Shirilla for this accident, but this was not a car accident,’ Christine Russo, the mother of Dominic Russo, said in court.

‘The evidence and science proved that Mackenzie Shirilla murdered my son Dominic as well as Davion.’

Despite maintaining her innocence, Shirilla’s conviction was upheld on appeal in 2024.

Then in March, the Eighth District Court of Appeals upheld a lower court decision rejecting Shirilla’s post-conviction petition, stating that a request for a new trial came one day too late under Ohio law.

‘The filing of a postconviction petition is a jurisdictional act,’ the court wrote in its ruling.

‘Because the appellant filed the petition on the 366th day following the filing of the trial transcript, the trial court was without jurisdiction to consider the merits of the claims, and the application of equitable tolling is prohibited in the context of this jurisdictional bar.’

Her attempt to secure a new trial had hinged not on new evidence, but on claims that a post-conviction petition arrived too late and she never got a full hearing.

Shirilla is now behind bars, serving a sentence of 15 years to life for the two deaths.
