Cornell 7 Accused Ordered to Write Drug Abuse Prevention Essays

A Cornell fraternity member accused of sexually assaulting a female student was assigned an essay on preventing drug use as part of his disciplinary punishment, according to a new report.

Scott Kretzschmar, one of seven Chi Phi members named in a sexual-assault lawsuit filed by Jane Doe, was instructed to develop recommendations and educational materials aimed at preventing substance use in Greek Life, according to a prompt obtained by The Cornell Daily Sun.

Jane Doe alleged that Kretzschmar and the six other men snorted ketamine off her body that night, according to the lawsuit. She also accused him of sexual assault, sexual battery and intentionally inflicting emotional distress.

A university-appointed panel found Kretzschmar responsible for attempted sexual exploitation following a Title IX investigation that concluded in May 2025.

As part of the sanctions, he was required to complete educational modules on sexual harassment, bystander intervention and social media use. He was also ordered to write a reflection paper and barred from contacting Jane Doe.

The assignment required him to submit, within 90 days of the investigation, “a reflection paper that engages with the specific circumstances for which he was found responsible.”

The report comes days after Winston Lee, another defendant in the case, hired attorneys who previously represented Sean “Diddy” Combs, The Sun reported on Wednesday.

All seven men have denied wrongdoing, and no criminal charges have been filed.

Lee is now represented by Teny Geragos, Marc Agnifilo and Jacob Kaplan, attorneys at the criminal-defense firm Agnifilo Intrater LLP.

The firm represented the rapper during his 2025 trial and also defended convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein in his 2026 Manhattan rape trial.

Agnifilo and Geragos represented Diddy, who was acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and two counts of sex trafficking.

He was convicted on two counts of transporting people to engage in prostitution, involving his former girlfriend and accuser Cassie Ventura and another former girlfriend. Diddy was sentenced to 50 months in prison.

Weinstein’s case ended in a mistrial in May after jurors voted 9-3 to acquit the former Hollywood film producer of raping Jessica Mann.

Prosecutors later dropped the rape charge after Mann said she could not endure another trial. Weinstein is serving a 15-year sentence in connection with another sexual-assault case.

Geragos and Agnifilo most recently represented Oren Alexander, one of three brothers sentenced Tuesday to 30 years in federal prison for their roles in a sex-trafficking scheme.

According to the report, Lee’s new attorneys have asked Tompkins County Court to remove New York Attorney General Letitia James from the criminal investigation, alleging that she is biased.

Winston Lee, another man named as a defendant in the case, hired Sean 'Diddy' Combs' A-list lawyer to represent him. He is now being represented by Teny Geragos, Marc Agnifilo (pictured during Diddy's trial in 2025) and Jacob Kaplan, who all work for the criminal defense firm Agnifilo Intrater LLP

Jane Doe alleged that the evening escalated after Newell posted in a fraternity Snapchat group that there was “free p***y” upstairs

New York Governor Kathy Hochul appointed James as special prosecutor in the case. Before that appointment, however, James wrote about the allegations on Facebook in comments that prompted questions about whether she could act impartially.

“What this young woman has been forced to endure is horrific and unacceptable. I’m holding her in my heart and in my prayers. To her, and to all survivors: you’re not alone. We stand with you,” James wrote.

Lee’s attorneys now argue that James’s “public political stunt” demonstrates that she has taken one side in the case.

“[T]he AG has made it abundantly clear that her mission is to bring criminal charges no matter what the evidence shows,” his attorneys wrote.

“This unabashed bias has already prejudiced Mr. Lee in the media and, more importantly, before potential grand jurors in Tompkins County.”

Lee’s motion follows a similar filing by Gillio Lopes, another man named in the lawsuit.

Lee's new legal team has gone on to ask the Tompkins County Court to remove New York Attorney General Letitia James from the ongoing criminal investigation, citing alleged bias, the report said

Lopes asked the New York State Supreme Court to invalidate Hochul’s appointment of James. The court is scheduled to hear those arguments on Thursday, the outlet reported.

Cornell conducted a months-long investigation into Jane Doe’s allegations. Faculty and staff held at least 12 formal hearings between January and May 2025 to review the evidence.

Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten ultimately decided not to bring charges against any of the seven men.

Jane Doe’s legal filing said that Matthew Ingalls and his fraternity brother Jonathan Newell were instead expelled from campus.

Lee and Lopes were suspended and placed on disciplinary probation.

Diego Sarabia, whom Jane Doe accused of forcibly kissing her that night, was declared persona non grata and barred from campus. He had graduated before the sanctions were imposed.

Kretzschmar and another man, Scott Norris, were ordered to complete courses on sexual harassment, social media use and bystander intervention. Norris was also required to write a reflection paper, according to the lawsuit.

Kretzschmar’s attorney told Our News Outlet: “Scott was cleared of all formal allegations in Jane Doe’s complaint—specifically, snorting ketamine off her body and seeing her naked—after a negative ketamine test confirmed that Doe had misrepresented his actions.

“Scott’s innocence was further corroborated after evidence from Doe and other parties confirmed he was not present during any sexual activity or while she was naked.

“Despite these facts, Cornell wrongfully found Scott liable for a concocted lesser violation of which he had no prior notice, concluding a prejudiced hearing that lacked fundamental due process.

“Any sanction imposed under this improper and biased Title IX process was entirely inappropriate—not too lenient. We continue to fight Cornell’s misconduct and decision in a real court of law.”
