A high-speed train travelling to the Spanish capital Madrid has derailed and collided with another train, killing more than 20 people.

A train journeying from Malaga in southern Spain to Madrid experienced a derailment in the town of Adamuz, leading it to veer onto the opposite track, as reported by ADIF, the country’s rail operator.

“Another train, heading from Madrid to Huelva, was also on the neighboring track and ended up derailing too,” the statement continued.

A representative from Spain’s interior ministry informed the press that the incident resulted in over 20 fatalities.

Currently, the precise number of casualties on each train remains unknown, and the extent of injuries is still being assessed.

Initially, emergency services reported severe injuries to 25 individuals, and the total number of injured has now climbed to 73.

Those injured have been transferred to six different hospitals, according to the official’s update.

The regional Civil Protection chief, María Belén Moya Rojas, told Canal Sur that the accident happened in an area that is hard to reach.

The train that derailed was operated by Iryo, a private high-speed rail operator owned by Italy’s state-owned rail company, a Spanish regional airline, and the Spanish infrastructure investment fund.
