A primary school teacher has revealed she has caught Covid for the third time in just one year.

Maryia Hussain, 26, first tested positive for the virus in December 2020, then again in November last year and then a third time last Monday.

She believed the hat-trick of infections was completed by catching the highly transmissible but less severe Omicron variant.

Maryia, from Bedfordshire, told Mail Online: ‘I had been double jabbed and when I got it for the second time last year, I just thought ‘Why me’.

‘And then I was about to book my booster jab after recovering from that when I caught it again.

‘None of my family and friends can quite believe that I have tested positive three times. It does seem like such bad luck.’

While many people have caught the virus twice – including Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer – a triple infection is still thought to be extremely rare.

Maryia first caught the virus in December 2020 when the Delta variant was sweeping across the country and businesses and schools were in lockdown.

As well as losing her sense of taste and smell Maryia was left breathless and bedridden for 10 days.

She isolated at home with her parents who also caught the virus at the same time. Fortunately, she did not need hospital treatment.

She said: ‘First time around was really bad. It started off with a sore throat, body chills and a continuous cough. I felt bad and had to use a steamer so I could breathe more easily. I was quite ill and even after I tested negative was too weak to go back to work because of Long Covid.’

Maryia told MailOnline: 'I think I keep catching it because of my job - there are always more bugs going around school than anywhere else and Covid must be the same'

Almost a year after the first Covid bout Maryia again tested positive in November 2021.

While the symptoms were not as bad second time round, she still suffered body chills and severe headaches.

A PCR test confirmed she had caught the virus twice and she was forced to isolate at home once again.

She said: ‘Again, I was too ill to work and had problems breathing. I go to the gym a lot so after I tested negative, I would visit the sauna to help with my breathing. That was the worst of it, not being able to breathe properly’.

Maryia believed having been infected twice – and double jabbed – she had seen the last of the killer virus. And she was in the process of trying to arrange a booster jab when she was struck down again.

Last Monday she suddenly started vomiting and suffered from abdominal pains.

A friend’s father who was a GP suggested she take a PCR test as the symptoms matched those of the Omicron variant.

Although more transmissible its symptoms have proved to be less severe than the Delta variant and others during the pandemic.

She said: ‘I just could not believe it when it came back positive. I must be the unluckiest woman in Britain.’

‘Fortunately, the symptoms were not as bad as the two previous and I am on the mend. It is just so annoying as very few of my friends have had it.’

She was planning to book a booster jab once fully over her second bout to protect her from future infections but contracted Covid for the third time before she could. She now wants a third jab as soon as she is recovered again.

‘I don’t know if it will stop me getting coronavirus for a fourth time, but anything that stops me feeling ill will be good.’

Data released in late December suggested some 69 people nationally out of 116,000 Omicron cases recorded between November 1 and December 18 had other Covid variants twice before.
