Fans Express Concern Over Shawn Mendes’ Girlfriend’s Recent Appearance

Brazilian actress and model Bruna Marquezine has recently stirred concern among her followers due to her noticeably slender appearance.

At 30, Marquezine, who is romantically linked to pop sensation Shawn Mendes, drew attention when she appeared at the Golden Globes in January.

On the red carpet, the Blue Beetle actress seemed significantly slimmer than usual. She also posted a behind-the-scenes shot on Instagram that quickly went viral, where her sternum, ribs, and collarbones were prominently visible.

Her svelte physique was once again evident during her appearance at the Academy Awards in Hollywood this March.

Over the past few months, Marquezine’s Instagram has been inundated with comments about her weight, with many noting that she previously had a fuller figure.

One follower remarked, “Bruna is beautiful in every way, but the obsession with extreme thinness is unfortunately affecting women’s perceptions globally.”

‘It’s her body and she feels good about it… but don’t normalize it because it’s not normal to be like that,’ wrote another.

A third argued, ‘I think for her line of work she “has” to stay in a slimmer shape.’

Another wrote, ‘People, I thought the photo on Twitter was fake and it’s not!’ 

Others have defended the star, insisting that she’s still healthy and beautiful at any size.

Marquezine has discussed her weight loss in the past, revealing on Instagram in 2018 that she battled body image issues in her early 20s.

‘I hated my body, thought I needed to lose weight, and took a laxative every day for three months,’ she wrote at the time, according to The Sun.

Since recovering, the actress had denied suffering from an eating disorder and has repeatedly insisted that she’s happy with how she looks.

‘I am very healthy and happy with who I am and with my body. That’s all that matters,’ she said in 2020.

Marquezine has also repeatedly fired back at online trolls over their continued speculation around her weight. 

‘Women’s bodies are not only there to please men, or please anyone for that matter, we just want to be healthy and happy,’ she wrote.

‘If you have opinions that are likely to offend or make someone feel bad about their body, no matter your intention, just stay quiet and do not comment.’

Marquezine is one of Brazil’s biggest stars, boasting over 43million followers on Instagram alone.

She’s been in the spotlight since childhood and was able to transition from a child star into a legitimate actress, primarily starring in popular soap operas. 

The Brazilian beauty is now making inroads in the American market, largely thanks to her role in the 2023 DC Comics blockbuster Blue Beetle and her romance with pop star Shawn Mendes. 

The genetically-blessed couple have been dating since late last year and were recently spotted canoodling on a beach in Rio de Janeiro together.  

Before being romantically linked to the Señorita singer, Marquezine was in an on-off relationship with Brazilian soccer star Neymar.

It comes after Mendes addressed ongoing speculation about his sexuality during an October 2024 concert. 

Telling his fans he was trying to be ‘really brave,’ the crooner — who famously dated Camila Cabello in the past — revealed he was still ‘figuring it out’.

‘There’s this thing about my sexuality, and people have been talking about it so long,’ he stated, adding it was ‘kind of silly, because I think sexuality is such a beautifully complex thing, and it’s so hard to just put into boxes’. 

‘The real truth about my life and my sexuality is that, man, I’m just figuring it out like everyone,’ he announced.

Mendes explained, ‘It always felt like such an intrusion on something very personal to me. Something that I was figuring out in myself, something that I had yet to discover and still have yet to discover it.’

He continued, ‘And it feels really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that.

‘And I’m trying to be really brave and just allow myself to be a human and feel things. And that’s all I really want to say about that for now.’

The In My Blood hitmaker also shared: ‘I was really young when I started. I was 15 years old. The truth is that I didn’t get to do a lot of 15-year-old things and discover parts of myself that you do at 15.’

He made the remarks before performing his song The Mountain, which includes the lyrics: ‘You can say I’m too young / You can say I’m too old / You can say I like girls or boys / whatever fits your mold.’

He also spoke about the songwriting process, telling the audience, ‘Writing the song felt really important to me because it felt like a moment where I could address it in a way that felt close to my heart.

‘And I guess I’m just speaking freely now, because I just want to be able to be closer to everyone and just kind of be in my truth.’
